Paul, Minnesota. He was born in DesMoines, Iowa. Bernard is survived by a brother, Raymond; three children, Ann, Bill, and Lisa; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He and Miriam, his 61 years, lived 40 years in Midland, Michigan, before moving to Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1986. He moved to Saint Pauli in January 2012.

A member of the Greatest Generation, Bernard was commander of a 500 bed Army hospital in the North African and Italian campaigns. At war's end he became CEO of the Midland Hospital and for over 30 years led its growth into a major regional health center. He also served as president of the Michigan Hospital Association and the TriState Hospital Assembly. A lifemember of the American College of Hospital Executives, he received many honors including, a doctor of public service degree from Central Michigan University and an Outstanding Service Award from his alma-mater, Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. Sara had a special talent for helping children learn to read. Her family is very proud of her ability to help countless children and adults with dyslexia finally find success in school. This was a passion she carried into her retirement through tutoring children using the Scientific Learning Program, a specialized computer program the she was credentialed to administer.

Sara will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and friend. She enjoyed working with her flowers and sitting on her back porch swing, decorating for holidays with homemade wreaths, shopping, UT games and traveling to visit family. She often visited the Cumberland County Playhouse and loved the town of Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Her grandchildren looked forward to her enthusiastic imitation of the accent in the Cajun Night Before Christmas, convinced she could speak a different language. Sara fought courageously to the end of an extended illness with hope, faith in God, support of family, and determination to remain independent so that she could spend time with the people that meant the most to her: her family grandchildren.
