Does TouchMath really work? ›

Decades of research have proven that TouchMath is an effective way to teach mathematics – and emerging research continues to shed light on why our approach works so well with so many students.

Dependence on a specific method: Students who are taught math using touch math may become reliant on the specific techniques and physical movements used in this method, and may struggle to adapt to other methods of solving math problems.

TouchMath is an evidence-based, multisensory approach to mathematics that can help students when other math learning solutions fail.

From Pre-K through 6th Grade (7th/8th in some states), TouchMath offers the standards-aligned curriculum your students need to succeed. Every element in our system is rooted in the C-R-A continuum and UDL principles, which makes it perfect as a core or supplemental math program.

TouchMath is a technique combining vision, movement, hearing and touch senses and is used to teach especially number sense and four operation skills. In TouchMath technique, reference points calling Touch Points are placed on each numbers. These points can help students to see the conceptual meaning of symbolic value.

The findings revealed that the touch math technique was effective in teaching basic addition to each participant. All three participants were found to be successful at the end of the teaching session, compared to the baseline.

1975-1979. Janet Bullock, with three colleagues, outlined the sequences that developed into the TouchMath methodology, starting with simple counting and number recognition activities. Students learned to count dots on paper or match objects (like buttons or beans) to help them recognize numbers and understand quantity.
