Ex-Knox lawyer, Ferguson, dies Former Knoxville lawyer Sumter Davis Ferguson, a member of the Knoxville Civil Service Board from 1962 to 1979, died Wednesday at Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville, where he had lived since his retirement in 1981. He was 71.

Ferguson practiced law in Knoxville for 33 years. He spent 13 years with a law firm before going into private practice in Fountain City. He was a graduate of Central High School and the University of Tennessee College Law. Ferguson was a member of the Fountain City Presbyterian Church and the Knoxville and Tennessee bar associations. He served in World War II.

Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. today at Lynnhurst Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Fountain City Presbyterian Church..
