Hand therapy is the science of evaluating and treating injuries and conditions affecting the hands. Hand therapy uses a variety of therapeutic interventions to help a person to return to their highest level of function possible.

Certified hand therapists (CHTs) are occupational or physical therapists who, through advanced study and experience, specialize in treating individuals with conditions affecting the hands and upper extremity. To obtain the CHT credential, a hand therapist must practice as an OT or PT for a minimum of three years, accumulating at least 4,000 hours of hand and upper extremity experience. Hand therapists must also pass a rigorous certification examination to demonstrate their competency in the practice of hand therapy.

This year, UofL Health welcomes Kleinert and Kutz therapy clinics to UofL Health’s established Hand Therapy team at Chestnut Street. UofL Health now has five hand therapy locations:

Hand therapists have vast knowledge and experience about upper extremity anatomy, physiology and tissue healing and possess a mastery of post-operative protocols for rehab of complex conditions.UofL Health CHTs work closely with physicians to follow protocols for custom orthotics, range of motion and strengthening after injuries to the upper extremity.

To learn more about hand therapy or to contact one of our offices for a referral, please see the website below:

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been in the news almost daily. The rise of AI, a simulation of human intelligence in machines programmed to think and learn like humans, is affecting many industries, including health care.

The benefits of incorporating AI into many facets of business abound and will only improve with time. However, there are downsides to rapidly evolving AI models – one of which is their use by cybercriminals to craft phishing scam emails.

The goal of a phishing scam has not changed in that cybercriminals seek to obtain confidential information (e.g., login credentials) that can lead to the theft of money, patient information and other sensitive or protected information or materials.

What has changed is that criminals are more than likely using AI models to create phishing email messages that will be even harder to identify. Current AI tools (such as generative AI used by ChatGPT and other models) ingest a vast amount of data to work and produce pretty accurate output information. This results in more targeted and personalized phishing messages.

Here are some of the ways that AI-generated phishing scams will be harder to detect:

  • Fewer grammatical errors reduce the likelihood that a message will be dismissed by a potential victim as fraudulent
  • Scammers may integrate digital voice cloning or photorealistic videos
  • Enables scammers to get progressively better at deceiving potential victims
  • Attackers can generate fake email addresses that look real

While the UofL Health – IT Security team is using technical controls to reduce the number of scam emails flowing into our organization, our team members are still our best defense to prevent a successful phish from entering our organization.

Here are some helpful tips to strengthen our human firewall:

  • Be wary of unexpected emails, phone calls and text messages. As always, do not click on any links or attachments in these communications. Remember to never log on to your account from a prompt or link provided by an unsolicited email or text message.
  • Before engaging with an unsolicited email, verify the source by checking the sender’s email address, website URL or social media profile. Check for minor variations or misspelled words.
  • Stay alert to the use of deepfake technology. If a video or audio recording received shows someone saying or doing something that doesn’t seem legitimate or differs from their usual behavior, try to verify the information with a trusted source.
  • Beware of spoofed numbers. Criminals will commonly fake the phone number displayed on caller ID so that it appears to be from a trusted organization (e.g., a bank)
  • Never give out personal financial information to a person who calls, texts or emails you unexpectedly. Voice cloning could allow a scammer to impersonate a legitimate entity, friend, family member or colleague with voice cloning technology.

Remaining vigilant and having a security-aware mindset will go a very long way in helping us reduce risk and prevent data breaches or other security incidents. For questions on phishing or good email security practices, please contact Greg Peebles, chief information security officer, at Greg.Peebles@UofLHealth.org or Carl Wilson, HIPAA security officer, at Carl.Wilson@UofLHealth.org.

Kimberly specializes in hemorrhagic strokes and traumatic brain injury. In her role as a nurse practitioner, she assists with the inpatient care of patients with aneurysms, vascular malformations and traumatic blood vessel injuries.

Kimberly’s favorite thing about UofL Health is the comradery. She is grateful that the APRNs and physicians work hand in hand with mutual respect.

“I provide urgent consultations for patients with vascular lesions, so they don’t have to worry about a new diagnosis and continuity of care for our long-term patients,” Kimberly said. “This allows my surgeons to continue high-level surgical care without worrying about their patients. My experience allows me to serve as a mentor to both nurses and residents as they develop their careers.”
Kimberly actively participates in activities hosted by the Brain Injury Alliance of Kentucky and Kentuckiana Stroke Association . She is currently the president of the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses, which is an organization that provides support to nurses caring for patients with all neurologic disorders. Audrey Self, MSSW, CSW, is a mental health therapist at UofL Health – Peace Hospital. She started with UofL Health in June 2020 as a mental health technician. Audrey completed her master of science in social work, obtained her CSW and enlisted in the Kentucky Army National Guard after moving to Louisville.

Audrey works with the Innovations population at Peace Hospital. Her unit specifically has children ages 4-12 with an IQ at or below 70.

“I provide individual, group and family therapy,” Audrey said. “Often, I advocate for my patients, especially regarding follow-up care. There are not many step-down services as options for this population. I love empowering the families of my patients to feel confident in their caretaking role. I get to work with an interdisciplinary treatment team. In that position, I get to apply a social work perspective as well as learn and collaborate with other disciplines. The holistic approach is beneficial to the patients. My primary population often surprises me. Although some are nonverbal and have limitations, my patients are strong and intelligent in their own way.”

Audrey’s hometown is Hopkinsville, Ky. She attended Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, for her bachelor of social work and then attended University of Louisville Raymond A. Kent School of Social Work and Family Science for her master’s degree. Audrey’s job in the National Guard is a 42A, human resources specialist.

Audrey’s hobbies include watching documentaries, watching college football and trying local restaurants.

Audrey has volunteered at Ronald McDonald House Charities by helping with fundraising, assisting in the NICU family suite and organizing donations. When she does not volunteer, she still stays connected with the organization.

Audrey is currently rewatching “Golden Girls,” “Parks and Recreation” and “The Office.” She is also listening to the “Social Workers, Rise!” podcast.

Audrey’s favorite inspirational quote is from Vince Lombardi: “Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing.”
